One of the most common questions I receive is:
"Is your vanilla extract pure vanilla extract?"
The answer is simple.
Yes.
But what does "pure vanilla extract" actually mean?
Many people assume that if a bottle says "vanilla" on the label, all vanilla products are essentially the same. Unfortunately, that isn't always true.
Let's take a closer look.
What Is Pure Vanilla Extract?
In the United States, the FDA has specific standards that define what can legally be called Pure Vanilla Extract.
A manufacturer cannot simply pour alcohol over a few vanilla beans and call it pure vanilla extract.
To meet FDA standards, a specific amount of vanilla beans must be used in relation to the amount of liquid produced.
These standards help protect consumers and create consistency throughout the industry.
At Gourmet Vanilla 'n Spice, I carefully weigh my vanilla beans and measure my alcohol to ensure every batch meets proper extract standards.
Why Standards Matter
Imagine purchasing maple syrup and discovering it was mostly corn syrup with maple flavoring.
Most people would feel misled.
The same principle applies to vanilla.
Products may look similar on a shelf, but what is inside the bottle can vary greatly.
That's why understanding standards and ingredients is important.
Pure Doesn't Mean Expensive Marketing Claims
Over the years, I've seen many marketing terms used to justify higher prices.
One example is "Gluten Free Vanilla Extract."
The truth is that pure vanilla extract is naturally gluten free.
Vanilla beans do not contain gluten.
When made properly, pure vanilla extract is already gluten free without requiring a special premium price.
As consumers, it's important to understand the difference between meaningful information and marketing language.
Natural Doesn't Automatically Mean Better
When I taught essential oils at the local college, students would often tell me:
"But it's natural, so it must be safe."
My response was always simple:
"Poison ivy is natural too."
Natural does not automatically mean safe.
Natural does not automatically mean high quality.
Natural does not automatically mean pure.
The important questions are:
What are the ingredients?
How was it produced?
Does it meet recognized standards?
Is the company transparent about its process?
Those same questions apply to vanilla extract.
Why Some Vanilla Products Cost Less
Consumers often wonder why one bottle of vanilla costs $5 while another costs $20 or more.
The answer usually comes down to:
Quality of vanilla beans
Amount of vanilla used
Aging time
Production standards
Ingredients used
Premium vanilla beans are one of the most labor-intensive agricultural products in the world.
Each vanilla orchid flower must be hand pollinated.
The beans are harvested, cured, sorted, and prepared before they can ever be used to make extract.
Quality ingredients simply cost more.
How We Make Our Vanilla
At Gourmet Vanilla 'n Spice, I use:
Premium Grade A vanilla beans
Proper FDA extract standards
Carefully measured ingredients
Premium alcohols
Small batch production
My extracts are aged a minimum of twelve months.
During that time, they are monitored, shaken regularly, and allowed to develop the rich flavor that only comes with patience.
I also use carefully selected oak blocks to help create a smoother, more rounded flavor profile.
Good vanilla isn't rushed.

My goal has never been to create the cheapest vanilla available.
